Do I need a water softener in Colorado Springs?
Short answer: on mountain-sourced Colorado Springs Utilities water, almost certainly not. Here's the long answer, with the numbers.
The number that settles most of this
Colorado Springs Utilities reported total hardness averaging 30.7 mg/L — about 1.8 grains per gallon — at its Pine Valley and McCullough treatment plants, with a measured range of 29.3 to 33.2 mg/L. Under every standard classification, anything below 60 mg/L is soft water.

Fountain is a fifteen-minute drive from Colorado Springs and its summer water is roughly eleven times harder. That is why generic advice is worthless here.
Why Colorado Springs water is soft in the first place
Roughly 75% of the city's supply is mountain snowmelt collected near Aspen, Leadville and Breckenridge, brought in through the Homestake, Fryingpan-Arkansas, Twin Lakes and Blue River systems. Snowmelt hasn't spent long in contact with the limestone and dolomite that put calcium and magnesium into groundwater. It arrives soft.
The exception nobody mentions
Colorado Springs Utilities states on its own water quality page that hardness “can depend on which treatment plant supplies your water,” and it does not publish a hardness figure for every plant. The Edward W. Bailey plant on Marksheffel Road treats water from Pueblo Reservoir delivered through the Southern Delivery System — Arkansas River water, a genuinely different and harder source than the mountain supply feeding the west side.
CSU has not published a hardness number for that plant. So if you're on the east side, the honest position is that nobody can tell you your hardness without measuring it, and anyone who quotes you a number over the phone is guessing.
When a softener still makes sense here
- You're on a private well. Wells in eastern El Paso County have been measured from 0.4 to 29.8 grains per gallon. Published city averages tell you nothing.
- You're served by the SDS side of the system and a test confirms elevated hardness.
- You're outside Colorado Springs proper — Fountain, Security, Widefield, Pueblo, Castle Rock. All genuinely hard.
How to check your own address in ten minutes
- Find your utility on your water bill. In this region it may be Colorado Springs Utilities, Fountain, Security, Widefield, Monument, Triview, Donala, Woodland Park, Castle Rock, Pueblo Water or Pueblo West.
- Search for that utility's Consumer Confidence Report or Water Quality Report. Every public system publishes one annually and it's free.
- Look for “hardness,” usually given in mg/L as calcium carbonate. Divide by 17.1 to get grains per gallon.
- If hardness isn't in the report — and for several systems in our area it isn't — the only way to know is to test.
